The Connor brothers create retro style figurative images which explore the ways in which women are perceived in popular culture. Their best known work is their Pulp Fiction series which combines homage to the book covers of romantic novels with quotations from male playwrights such as Wilde, Shakespeare and Shaw. Intriguing and playfully ironic, these pieces encourage us to challenge our assumptions and preconceptions, and as a result to perhaps see the world a little differently.

The brothers' interest in undermining our assumptions and casual acceptance of cultural norms is reflected in their extraordinary background. They themselves started out as a fiction -in reality they are British artists Mike Snelle and James Golding. They first
entered the art world as twin brothers Franklyn and Brendan Connor who had escaped from a California cult by running away to Brooklyn at age 16. Their success eventually turned the story into a hindrance, so they revealed their true identities but retained their famous pseudonym, which serves to remind us to question our assumptions other people, and ourselves.

Today the Connor Brothers align their work with social causes. After working in the notorious French refugee camp known as The Jungle, they launched the Refuchic billboard campaign, which forced us to examine our attitude to poverty and displacement.

They have created a refugee-themed show at Banksy's Dismaland, and they continue to work with mental health charity, CALM.

"Artifice is often the best way to depict reality, fiction the best way to challenge conventional ideas of what we think of as 'the truth'. Most people are happy to think 'this is the way it is'. But it really isn't. Who knows the truth of anything?"
